Even though some speaking opportunities don’t slow down for busy executives as I wrote in my last post, I have obviously slowed down with the blog writing a little too. I’ve been a little busier with some other projects, but reality is that things are just slower in the summer of 2010. That said, it’s not at a complete halt. Here are some of my latest global brain candy thoughts.
For the next book club, we’re reading Zeitoun, which is a story about Syrian-born Abdulrahman Zeitoun’s experience after Katrina. I will limit detailed discussion of the book to the ...read more

I follow the blogs of Fred Wilson and Brad Feld, two venture capitalists of media companies, to stay abreast of the latest media trends, so I thought it was interesting to see that they both joined an effort to create and promote Startupvisa.com. They established the site to raise awareness of the EB-5 visa, “which enables investors from other countries to get a visa in exchange for starting a business in the US with $1M in capital (or $500K for economically targeted areas) & the creation of at least 10 US jobs” and to support their proposal to “enable ...read more

I was excited to hear the news about the F.C.C.’s (Federal Communications Commission) effort to expand Internet access across the country. During my Peace Corps service, I did a lot of work to close the digital divide in Panama, so I’m very familiar with the opportunities that access to technology can offer. Two students can have the same level of intelligence, but their opportunities can vary greatly if one has access to a computer and the other doesn’t. In fact, a less intelligent student with knowledge of how to use a computer would likely have more opportunities than a more intelligent one with no ...read more

I took off for a long weekend thinking that I would disconnect a little technologically and hit the books like wrapping up Obama’s Dreams from My Father and Jhumpa Lahiri’s Unaccustomed Earth. Just when I was looking forward to reconnecting and writing, that little tech break became a long one. I forgot my charger and had to remind myself that a disconnected life is ok. Now that I’m back, more to come!

With the new year, I wanted to refresh my “About” section, and now seemed like a great moment in time to do it. In addition, at the beginning of this month, I am embarking onto a semi-new adventure of doing a lot more media work than I have in the past, and I can’t wait!
In my last “About” section, I started off with a quote from White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste.” At the beginning of 2010, that whole idea was sounding so stale, and a part of my life was ...read more

After having lived in New York for so many years, I consciously stay away from Times Square during this week of the year since the crowds are just too much to handle. Watching everything on TV is great! But when I got the unique opportunity to see the Times Square Ball LIVE, the reluctance to deal with crowds in freezing weather disappeared. What an amazing New Year’s treat! The first major surprise was that it was much smaller than I imagined with only a diameter of 12 feet. It’s so tiny compared to ...read more

I started this blog a couple of months ago since I felt that I wasn’t getting enough storytelling in my life, and I’ve slowed down a lot lately since I have been getting so much of it. Shortly after I started this blog, I also started pitching and placing stories a lot more in the media. One day pitching to the media was one microscopic percentage of my day and the next day I was getting to do it for sustainable, small business, gadgets stories, and it was SO INTERESTING. I had pitched and placed stories before, but I was suddenly doing it at a much, much higher volume and ...read more

I’ve been wracking my brain lately for more inspiration on what to blog about and the direction that Global Brain Candy should take, and one idea dawned on me when I read “Adding Fees and Fences on Media Sites” in The New York Times. Given that we’re less than a week away from 2010, I also thought that making this idea part of a Global Brain Candy New Year’s Resolution might be a great way to more formally add a new dimension to the Media Corner section.
“Adding Fees and Fences on Media Sites” touched on a major question in the media industry of monetizing ...read more

Since I’m posting this right before Thanksgiving, I wanted to take this opportunity to send a big thanks to my blog visitors for taking time to stop by. Launching and maintaing a blog can be a real time suck, but I think that the upside more than compensates in the sense that it’s given me the opportunity to explore other interests outside of work and connect with others who have mutual interests or are just curious about similar things.
Given that this blog’s been up for a little more than six months, I thought I’d post some of the most popular ones (not just from the last week thanks to Google ...read more

As part of Technorati’s annual State Of The Blogosphere report one of my favorite bloggers, Fred Wilson at AVC.com, shared some thoughts on VCs and entrepreneurs who blog.
He pointed out that blogging can help entrepreneurs communicate with key stakeholders and build their reputation and thought leadership. While this can be true, it is also easier said than done to do so effectively and credibly as Smashing Magazine notes in “10 ...read more
